History of Arlington, Vermont

Arlington, Vermont is a small town located in the southern part of the state. It was first settled in 1761 by Samuel Robinson, who had been granted a tract of land from the Province of New York. The town was originally known as “Robinson’s Gore”, and it was part of Bennington County until 1802 when it became part of Windham County.

The town’s name changed to Arlington in 1819 in honor of General Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee, who served with distinction during the American Revolutionary War and was father to Robert E. Lee. Arlington quickly became an important commercial center for the surrounding area, with numerous stores and services located along Main Street.

The railroad arrived in Arlington in 1848, making it easy for people and goods to travel to and from the town. This led to an influx of new residents and businesses, helping to further develop the local economy. With its convenient location between Bennington and Manchester, Arlington also became a popular stop on stagecoach lines traveling between New York City and Montreal.

In 1861, during the Civil War, Arlington was home to Camp Holbrook – a military training camp for over 1,000 Union soldiers from Vermont and New Hampshire. Afterward, many veterans chose to stay in Arlington and settle down permanently.
