How to Make a Backpack in United States

My first backpacking was not a backpack. Was wheelie bag, dragged wherever I was going. But all the adventurous spirit and the quest for economy were there. To 20 years, I had spent three months working like crazy at a McDonald’sin the United States, and doing all the extra hours possible to raise money for this trip. I wouldn’t have any dollar beyond what I could with this job, so all the planning of the trip has been designed around spending restraint.

The visa that I took, the J1, allows you to work for three months and have a month off, what they call a grace period. There are people who can join a lot of money and even prefer out of the United States and enjoy a season in Europe with the money earned. I thought I’d better get to know the country where I was living and leave to see other continents in other opportunities. In addition, when I was, in 2008, had just burst the crisis and was not easy to get a second job, as was the case in previous years.

My backpack in United States

Before starting the trip, we left one of the bags in our head of McDonald’s, in Concord, New Hampshire’s capital. Yes, I had two bags of about 25 kg each. Only I know how much I was suffering carrying those stuff. The problem is that in addition to this being my first major international trip, I also lived in a cold of minus 30 degrees in Lincoln – was very coat and boots. Still, I learned the hard way that decrease the bag is one of the secrets of success of any journey – but I admit I only learned this art during my trip back to the world, years later. Make bags or small and useful mochilões is, in fact, an art.

According to Businesscarriers.com, the script of my backpacking by the United States included Boston (and a day trip to Salem), New York, Washington DC, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. From there we had to turn around in Concord to get my bags and go to Boston again to catch the flight back to Brazil. At first, we wanted to have included San Francisco in the script, but lacked the time and money.

Cheap shipping in United States

We decided to make the short snippets of buses, that is, from Boston to NEW YORK, then to DC and LA to Vegas. The road company chosen was the Greyhound, which is the largest and most famous for there. But I confess that it is not the cheapest. There are other smaller companies (and less safe and reliable) that make the paths. But as we buy a few tickets over the internet, we prefer to use the most famous company-at that time I was a junior in the guts to get on buses capengas. Bus tickets in the United States are cheap, cost about $30. However, nowadays I advise you to keep an eye on flights of Low Cost, including aéras companies on short trips. Depending on the season and promotion, can be cheaper.

We traveled to DC to Vegas of Virgin Airways, which at the time had just been launched on the market. The flight was pretty cheap and sensational, with a system of individual very complete inflight entertainment and snacks. Back to Boston was made of Jet Blue, the owner of blue. The flight was great too, with the same benefits of the return flight. Both, in fact, much better than my international flight of American Airlines. A good site for flight search is Kayak.com.

How to feed without spending a lot of

Food is something that can be very cheap in the United States, if you do not cling to details such as nutrition and calories. Turns out the fast-foods there is a beautiful thing called “Dollar Menu”. That is, a “complete” meal expense of 3 to 5 dollars. Who gets sick from eating potatoes, sandwich and soda every day, can change the potatoes for salad and ginger ale for juice, for example. In fact, one thing I learned working at McDonalds is that if you’re the roots level of economy can replace your coolant for tap water (tap water) and not pay anything for it. I didn’t get to this level, but the hint.

In addition, there are numerous varieties of fast foodchains. Has the known internationally and those that only exist there, so you can explore a network with every meal. Also to take advantage of the many options of food supermarket family size of type “Family Dollar” that sell large packages of food for a dollar.

Accommodation for backpackers

Without a doubt, is the most expensive item of the trip. In the US I just stayed in hostels. As he had done that card of a member of Hosteling International (HI), I stayed in that had this flag, because I couldn’t get a discount of about 15% on hosting. The average prices in the United States is $30 (you can go up in the big cities or in high season). All the hostels where I stayed had breakfast, so we enjoyed to eat enough and keep a fruit for snack. The hostel of New York gave us discount coupons for a Broadway play and organized a trip to a huge Club that I don’t remember the name. Enjoyed them all and recommend the HI in the United States.

Other economies

I let my mother and sisters when you didn’t come back with a bag full of groceries. Yet brought presents good for all, purchased in one of these huge outlets that are there. When I went, I created a personal rule of not buying anything that exceeded the value of 30 dollars and work so well. The United States is indeed the country of consumerism and things were very cheap for our standards. However, this was not my focus of Hitcher without backpack. In addition to a gift for each family member, I bought a computer and an MP3 player that was a bargain and blown my budget-of course, I researched a lot and bought the cheapest store.

The entries of the places and tours have a common price. Has many big museums are free and only ask for a donation is not mandatory (although this isn’t a publicizado). Other than that, has many free rides, like walking for historical trails in cities, monuments, parks and squares or the free ride the Staten Island ferry to see the statue of liberty.

Anyway, I believe that with an average of 60 to 70 dollars a day it is possible to make a backpack in United States economic. I recommend a lot and plan to go back there soon.
